I've loved this band since the early nineties and this debut album from 1986 gives a few hints on how great they were to become. The one big downside to this album is that is full of my pet hate: jangly guitars. (I hate the jangly guitar sound with a passion, it just sounds horrible and cheap).
This album is not too good but at the same time not too bad either. There are some great tracks (Really Hard, Billys Shirts, Why So Close and Black Hole) and some terrible ones (Summer Songs, Withdrawn and Just Hip). The remaining ones are just average.
Stutter is well worth picking up if you see it on offer for a few quid or if you a James completeist. 2.5/5

Stutter has some bad moments (Summer Songs for one) but some great ones too. It hints teasingly at the greatness which will follow with all their future albums.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, when I review their subsequent albums we'll see how they get better with each one, at least up until Laid.
